This trade can be seen as a "remedy" for the Sixers after signing Caleb Martin to a four-year, $40 million contract last July. At that time, considering their limited salary cap space due to signing Paul George, it seemed like a smart move. I had rated this signing an “A” in free agency assessments because of its creativity (including unlikely incentives worth $5 million not counting against the cap). However, my confidence in this deal has diminished over seven months.
Kai Leibu-Marten is clearly not the reason why the Sixers have won less than 50% of their games this season; however, he also failed to become part of the solution. Despite shooting 38% from three-point range (above his career average of 36%), his overall scoring efficiency has been below average with just a 47% success rate on two-pointers—the lowest since his rookie season (36%). On defense too, Martin did not emerge as a game-changing player despite taking on relatively tough defensive tasks—his opponent usage rate was at least higher than any other defender on Philadelphia’s roster according to Second Spectrum data.
The recent winning streak came during Martin's absence due to hip injury while rookie Justin Edwards performed well starting in lineup roles.
Pitifully compared with Grimes who excelled more prominently throughout this current campaign: boasting impressive statistics such as hitting up-to-date figures including both threes and twos respectively showing significant improvement across all metrics utilized by coaching staff evaluating talent acquisition processes undertaken here recently!
